The play, based on the famous work by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, marks the first production by Yuri Butusov as the artistic director of the Vakhtangov Theatre. In his own words, he “took on a giant,” and therefore his four-hour production is merely “an attempt to touch it.” Butusov had envisioned this staging ten years ago.
The lead roles in Peer Gynt are performed by Evgenia Kregzhde, Yana Sobolevskaya, Pavel Popov, Yuri Tsokurov, and Adelina Gizatullina. One incarnation of Peer Gynt is portrayed by Saint Petersburg actor Sergey Volkov, a student of the director.
The production team also includes scenographer Alexander Barmenkov, costume designer Maxim Obrezkov, and choreographer Nikolai Reutov.
The premiere was attended by Konstantin Khabensky, Natalia Sindeeva, Nadezhda Mikhalkova, Natalia Goldenberg, Marina Zudina, Elizaveta Yankovskaya, Pavel Tabakov, and others.
